ABOUT MEWASSIN COMMUNITY COUNCIL

Vision:

Our communities are sustained by solidly supported agricultural home industries, and our environment of air, water and soil is clean and free of all toxic emissions and wastes.

Mission:

To respond to threats to our local environment and agricultural lands.

CURRENT EDUCATION, OUTREACH PROGRAMS OR ACTIVITIES

  • Predominantly, information is disseminated through personal contact, frequently by telephone, and less frequently, by public meetings.
  • Ongoing: informing residents of strip mining in our region, particularly gravel and coal, and participating in the development and appeal processes of Parkland County.
  • Accumulating articles on various issues: toxic emissions, strip mining, heavy metals, health studies relating to fossil fuel emissions

Other information:

  • Originally formed to oppose subdivision of farmland in 1970s.
  • Remobilized in 90s to challenge composting/dump facility west of Keephills, close to North Saskatchewan River.
  • Remobilized in 2001 to appeal expansions of Genesse and Keephills power plants.
